The Rake's Progress- Boston Lyric Opera - March 12 – 19, 2017
With a libretto by W.H. Auden and Chester Kallman, based loosely on William Hogarth’s series of paintings depicting the decline and fall of a materialistic playboy, The Rake’s Progress follows Tom Rakewell as he abandons his stable home life to cavort in the pleasures of London with a devilish valet at his side.

Our American Hamlet - March 2017

One of Greater Boston's most beloved traditions, Commonwealth Shakespeare Company's Free Shakespeare On the Common takes up residence once again with Shakespeare’s drama of doomed teenage love, Romeo & Juliet. The Capulet and Montague families have been engaged in a multi-generational feud, causing much distress and havoc in the city of Verona; but when young Romeo, son of the Montagues', meets Juliet, the daughter of the Capulets', their immediate love blossoms and accepts no barriers, with tragic results.

The first English opera, composed in 1688 and still fresh, tuneful and engaging, tells the story of Dido, Queen of Carthage, and her doomed relationship with the Trojan Prince Aeneas, bound by fate to abandon her for Italy. In the course of the drama we also meet a wicked sorceress, a drunken sailor, and various witches, spirits, and courtiers, all wrapped in emotionally affecting music from heartbreaking to comedic.

Against a backdrop of war, chaos and corruption, a singer named Floria Tosca must give the performance of a lifetime to save the man she loves. Set in early 1800s Italy, Tosca is the passionate, sweeping story of three strong-willed characters destined to become masters and victims of their own fate.

Verdi’s sinister tragedy. This time-honored tale of seduction and bitter revenge is boldly imagined in this new production. The disfigured jester Rigoletto must do everything in his power to protect his innocent daughter from the lecherous Duke of Mantua before she falls into his clutches. Brimming with rich melodies and featuring the famous aria “La donna è mobile,” Rigoletto tragically unfurls as it races toward its devastating conclusion.
